Colts vs Skylanders of Sussex County
Last night the SUNY Orange Colts had the honor of being a part of Sussex County's annual Military Appreciation Night to show their appreciation to the men and women who served our country.
In what was a beautiful Wednesday night game where all the stars were aligned for a perfect baseball game. This was the Colts third time facing off against the Skylanders this season and after losing the first two games they will be looking to win the third game and avoid the three game sweep.
To start out the game the Colts were able to jump out to and put up the first points on the board thanks to a leadoff Triple from Josh Martin who smashed an opposite field fly ball over the right fielders head and was able to make his way to third in time before they could make the tag. Martin was later able to touch home plate after a Derek Sherman single to give the Colts their first run of the game but despite their great start to the game the Colts unfortunately were unable to get it done losing 12-7 through nine innings of play. The Colts were held scoreless innings 3-5 and in the top of the 6th inning they scored four runs on four hits, starting off with a single from Aundre Rick who used his speed to beat the throw to first followed by a moonshot two-run-homerun from Josh Martin. The next two batters had the same outcomes with Kurtis Martin hitting a line drive to the left fielder for a single followed by a Derek Sherman line drive two-run-home run to left center field. The Colts collected 13 totals hits as a team and scored 7 runs and in 39 at bats they walked just four times and struck out 7 times as a team. It was the Sophomores who had stepped up in last nights game, sophomore SS Derek Sherman finished the game with a fantastic stat line getting on base 4/5 times with four runs batted in. Sherman was one hit away from what could have been a Cycle, finishing the game with two singles, a double and a homerun he was a triple shy of achieving something not many have done. Josh Martin also had a fantastic night after starting the game off with an emphatic triple he would later get on base one other time from a free base on a ball four call before rounding all the bases on an energetic two run homerun to start their 6th inning rally. Kurtis Martin also had a great night finishing the day with 3 hits in four at bats and one base on ball, Martin had one run batted in and came around to score two times without striking out. Andrew Reda collected just one hit in the 6th inning which resulted in a triple.
The Colts used to give everyone a chance to step on the mound as they had 7 different pitchers in the game in order for them to be healthy for their conference series coming up they were limited to the amount of innings pitched. Anthony Papagni was the one who took the loss for the Colts going just one inning to start the game, surrendering four runs just one of which was earned on one hit while walking one and striking out none.
The Colts will have to look past their tough loss as they take on the Vikings of Westchester in their last regular season conference series of the 2024 season.
