New Rochelle, NY - The SUNY Orange softball team opened up their season with two wins against Monroe-Bronx on Sunday, March 15. The final scores were 13-11 and 8-1.
Game One - SUNY Orange (13) - Monroe-Bronx (11)
The Colts got on the board early, scoring one run in the first inning. After a scoreless second inning for SUNY Orange, Monroe-Bronx answered with a run to even the score at 1-1
In the third inning the Colts scored one run, the Express scored three more runs taking the lead 4-2. Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth inning.
Alexandra Crushing drove in three runs.Caitlyn Higby added a RBI single, whileTaylor Horaz walked to bring in one run. Monroe-Bronx also added five runs in the fifth inning making the score 9-7.
The Colts responded in the sixth inning with a big rally. Horaz reached on an error, allowing Alexandra Soto to score, and Higby followed with a three-run home run to give SUNY Orange an 11-10 advantage. Monroe-Bronx managed to tie the game at 11-11 in the seventh, forcing extra innings.
In the eighthAlissandra Soto delivered a two run home run, securing the victory for the Colts.
For the ColtsBridget O'Leary got the win after facing 32 batters allowing eight earned runs and striking out nine batters.Taylor Horaz faced 12 batters allowing no earned runs and striking out four batters.
Game Two - SUNY Orange (8) - Monroe-Bronx (1)
SUNY Orange brought in one run in the first inning thanks to an RBI single from Hannah Moulton. The Colts brought in an additional run in the second inning off a RBI fromAudrey Reeves. The Express scored one run in the second after a throwing error from the Colts.
In the third inningCaitlyn Higby had a sacrifice fly RBI bringing in one run. Bridget O'Leary walked to bring in one run. Chastity Mendoza scored on a passed ball, bringing the score to 5-1.
The Colts added two more runs in the fourth inning whenAlissandra Soto scored on a passed ball and Chasitry walked to bring in a run, extending their lead to 7-1.
After a scoreless fifth inning, SUNY Orange added one more run in the sixth inning thanks to an RBI fromAlexandra Cushing. Both teams were held scoreless in the final inning, sealing a 8-1 victory for the Colts.
Taylor Horaz got the win pitching all seven innings for the Colts facing 28 batters allowing no earned runs and striking out three batters.
