Middletown, NY - The SUNY Orange softball team split with Sussex County Community College in doubleheader on Thursday, April 23. The Colts took the first game with a final score of 15-5, but the Skylanders took the victory in the second game 12-11.
Game One - SUNY Orange (15) - Sussex (5)
The Skylanders got on the board first, scoring two runs in the opening inning, but the Colts responded with two runs of their own thanks to Hannah Moulton (Minisink, NY / Minisink), who scored on a wild pitch, and an RBI single fromChasity Mendoza (Middletown, NY / Middletown).
In the second inning, the Colts broke the game open with four runs to take a 6-2 lead.Taylor Horaz (Cornwall, NY / Cornwall) and Caitlyn Higby (Minisink, NY / Minisink) each drew bases-loaded walks to force in runs, Audrey Reeves (Wallkill, NY / Wallkill) contributed a sacrifice fly, and Alexandra Crushing (Wurtsboro, NY / Monticello) capped the inning with an RBI single.
Sussex County brought in one run in the third while the Colts added two more runs, after Horaz drove in two runs off a single to left field.
The Colts took control in the fourth inning, scoring seven runs while holding the Skylanders to two. Mendoza, Nyla Sepulveda, Moulton (Bronx, NY / Cornwall), Alissandra Soto (Middletown, NY / Middletown), Horaz, Higby, and Cushing each drove in runs during the inning.
Pitching for the Colts was Bridget O'Leary (Fishkill, NY / John Jay) allowing four earned runs and having four strikeouts.
Game Two - SUNY Orange (11) - Sussex (12)
The SUNY Orange Colts jumped out to a 3–0 lead in the first inning. Soto hit an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch, and Cushing added another run with an RBI groundout.
In the second inning the Skylanders rallied for five runs, but the Colts answered back with three more runs off an RBIs from Soto, Horaz and Higby, bringing the score to 6-5.
The Colts created more separation in the third inning, driving in four runs off RBIs from Moulton and Horaz. Sussex responded in the fourth by adding four runs, while the Colts added one run off an RBI from Mendoza.
In the seventh inning the Skylanders took the lead bringing in three runs, while holding the Colts to a scoreless inning.
Horaz pitched for the Colts, facing 41 batters, allowing nine earned runs, and recording four strikeouts.
